A little clarity before you hit send

A word limit and a character limit measure different things. A 100-word paragraph can be short or long in characters, depending on the words you choose. Use the word total for assignment limits and the character total for a field that limits the number of characters. Spaces and line breaks are included in the main character count; the second count removes whitespace.

How the count works

Where your browser supports it, the counter uses its built-in word segmentation to recognize words in different writing systems. Punctuation on its own is not a word. Different applications can split hyphenated words, contractions, and languages differently, so a small difference from another editor is possible. For a formal submission, the receiving platform’s counter is the final reference.

Reading time is a planning estimate

The reading estimate assumes 200 words per minute and rounds up to a whole second. It can help you judge the size of a blog post or newsletter. It does not predict how long someone will need to study unfamiliar terms, follow instructions, or read aloud. Those tasks often take longer. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line; sentence counts are approximate because abbreviations and punctuation are ambiguous.

Good questions.

Does the text leave my browser?

The counter processes text in this page. It does not send the text to a Daykit server or store a copy.

Why does another app show a different total?

Applications use different rules for punctuation, compound words, and language boundaries. Check the counter used by the platform where you will submit your work.

Does the character total include emojis?

Yes. The counter counts Unicode code points. A combined emoji can contain several code points, even if it looks like one symbol. It may differ from the limit used by a social platform.
