Clean a text list without losing its meaning
Removing repeated lines is easy. Deciding whether two lines represent the same thing can be harder. A careful workflow keeps that decision visible.
Keep an untouched source
Before cleaning a list, keep the original in its current order. A downloaded source or a copied document can provide a useful reference if a later rule removes something unexpectedly. For a list that represents people, payments, or another consequential record, use its authoritative system and identifiers rather than treating a text utility as a record-management system.
Choose what whitespace means
Extra spaces around a label are often accidental. Internal spaces can be meaningful: “New York” should not become “NewYork”. Daykit’s list cleaner trims the outside of each line only. Removing empty lines is a separate option. If a blank line separates sections, decide whether that structure should be kept before turning on removal.
Choose what case means
Accra and accra can be one location label with inconsistent capitalization. Two case-sensitive codes may instead be different values. The ignore-case option changes the duplicate matching rule, while preserving the first spelling. It is not a rule for identifying people or resolving misspellings. Check whether your source’s meaning actually allows the normalization you are applying.
Preserve order unless sorting is the task
A list may already be arranged by priority, sequence, or the time entries were added. Deduplicating while keeping first occurrence preserves more of that structure than sorting everything immediately. If you do choose sorting, inspect labels containing numbers and accents. Language-aware ordering can vary slightly by browser and locale, so document the convention when ordering is important.
Compare before replacing
Paste the original and cleaned lists into the difference checker. Added and removed lines make the effect visible, but the comparison is line-based: changing one character replaces the whole line. Repeated lines can align in more than one valid way, and a moved line may look removed and added. Use the result to review changes, not to infer an editor’s intention.
Export a copy with a clear purpose
Copy the cleaned list into its destination or download a separate text file. Name it so that it is distinguishable from the source. If another application imposes a word or character limit, check that requirement separately. A plain-text operation does not preserve document formatting, embedded links, or table structure.
