Clock times need a day convention

From 09:00 to 17:00 on the same day, eight hours elapse. From 22:00 to 06:00, the next-day option makes that an eight-hour overnight period. If the end is earlier and the option is not selected, the tool asks you to correct the convention instead of silently adding a day. The same clock time on consecutive days represents 24 hours.

Subtract only the break you intend

A break is entered in minutes and cannot be negative or longer than the selected period. For 09:00 to 17:00 with a 30-minute break, the net result is 07:30:00, equivalent to 7.5 decimal hours. Seven hours and thirty minutes is not 7.30 decimal hours: the thirty minutes must be divided by sixty.

This is clock arithmetic, not a timesheet policy

The tool assumes a 24-hour day and does not apply time zones, daylight-saving transitions, overtime rules, payroll rounding, or local employment terms. For a real timestamp across a clock-change boundary, compare actual timezone-aware timestamps instead. The result can help plan a study block, check a schedule, or verify a simple total, but it does not establish paid hours under a workplace policy.

Good questions.

Is 7 hours 30 minutes equal to 7.30 hours?

No. It is 7 + 30/60 = 7.5 decimal hours.

Does the tool handle daylight saving?

No. It compares clock readings under a fixed 24-hour-day convention.

Can I calculate more than a day?

The next-day option supports one following day. Use date-aware records for longer spans.
