Keep a slug descriptive and stable

A useful slug tells a reader what to expect from a page. “prepare-images-for-the-web” is easier to recognize than an unexplained string of numbers. The tool lowercases letters, removes apostrophes, changes other separating punctuation into your selected separator, and removes separators at the beginning and end. It does not add a domain or create a page.

Accents and non-Latin text

The generator uses Unicode normalization and removes common combining accent marks, so Café becomes cafe. It keeps letters and numbers from other writing systems rather than pretending to translate them into English. Some normalized characters can still look unfamiliar. Unicode slugs are supported by many websites, but may appear percent-encoded when copied through another application. Check your publishing platform’s rules.

A slug is only one part of a URL

This tool does not check availability, redirects, reserved names, or search ranking. Avoid changing the address of an existing indexed page without planning an appropriate redirect. For a new page, use a concise phrase that matches its actual subject. If two pages get the same slug, add a meaningful distinguishing word rather than silently replacing one with the other.

Good questions.

Will a slug improve rankings by itself?

No. A descriptive address helps readers understand a link, but it does not replace useful content or establish a ranking.

Does it translate languages?

No. It keeps Unicode letters and applies basic normalization, not translation or full transliteration.

Does it check whether the URL exists?

No. Check your own publishing platform for duplicate or reserved paths.
